What a year. Firstly, I would like to say that this year in VAM 3o has been very eye-opening. There have been challenges, and there have been successes. The majority are successes. Beginning of the process, I had doubts that this project would be too difficult, that this project is more than I can bite off., or that my concept would just be too confusing to interpret on a canvas. At the beginning of the process, I had many plans, to make this piece a more personal and sentimental piece, but going through it, plans and concepts change. This piece became more of my beliefs in astronomy and spiritual things. This project gave me a challenge in many aspects, many questions rose, Layout? How do I connect them? What does everything mean? Do they correlate with each other no matter what the center piece is? all these questions circled in my mind throughout the painting process. These pieces are all intertwined from there design to their names, Interstellar, Interdimensional, Extraterrestrial & Terrestrial, All the names are different renditions of Interstellar because all the paintings are renditions of each other.
These pieces are very up to scale, they range from a meter and a half to even 2 meters or just under. Throughout this project, there were a lot of learning processes that I had dealt with, for example, the contrast of colors. I had many colors that blended together, and I had to learn depth and contrast. Along with painting different textures, It was a mix of MDX vinyl wood, A sheet of wood and Plywood, very different textures and consistencies especially with the absorption of the paint, one went on like butter and another would absorb the paint to the point there would be many layers added just for a coverage, There are many characteristics of my pieces. The wolf, One-eyed lady, planets, and the biblically accurate angel with the sword. Many of these correlate with each other, because of the mythical background. The astrological symbols along with aspect symbols, they all connect.
In the beginning of the year, I had said that I was gonna do three paintings, because I thought that would satisfy my time and keep me busy, but little did I know, time flew by, and I was ahead. So ahead, I was able to create one more painting. Through the project, I had my doubts that I would fall behind, or I would run out of time, but I was motivated enough to put my head and hands to work and complete my tasks. I'm not an angel tho, I have had the days I was unmotivated to paint, or to even open my computer, Mr. Grey had to helicopter to keep me motivated, and just to remind me what i'm there for. But I'm pleased with how my project came out, and I'm beyond thrilled.
My project shows my knowledge in astrology, and shows my growth in the program. It's sad that this is my last year in VAM, but throughout the 3 years in the program and the 4 plus years i've been in art, I'll always improve my art and my style and my knowledge will always grow and become more and more developed.

"Neytiri and Seze"
3ft 11.75 inches" and 3ft 8.96 inches"
My Artist Statement
My Art Project this year focused on the movie ‘Avatar,’ I sparked interest in the movie not only for the story, but for the artistry in the movie itself. Watching Avatar, it was inspiring to me to create something that was not only colorful, but creative and up to scale. For my piece I created an acrylic painting that measures roughly 3ft 11.75 inches ( W ) and 3ft 8.96 inches ( L ) on a masonite panel covered in gesso as a base. Throughout this entire process, there are ups and downs.I myself challenged myself to the realism aspect and the sheer size of the project itself. Starting this project I was swinging big, but I wanted to see how far I could go as an artist. I obviously had my doubts and my worries, but once I started the project, I found myself growing more confident.
Throughout this project, there were a lot of learning processes that I had dealt with, for example, the contrast of colors. I had many colors that blended together, and I had to learn depth and contrast. I was using a photo for reference, and it always worried me that they wouldn’t look alike. But the point of this project was it’s your own art style, nothing is meant to look alike, nothing is supposed to be identical. To also add to my painting, I wanted to solely focus on the character “Neytiri” a warrior, princess of her clan, the gem of the story. She always sparked my interest. I wanted her as my main aspect in my painting, to show the strength and fierceness of her as a growing woman. Her character is super strong willed, has a big heart for her family and would do anything for the people she loves. To me that’s always something that people miss, even in the movie, avatar’s are creatures who destroy the planet of Pandora and are in the way of the government, lifeless, and not human.
This brings me to the dragon in my painting, The dragon in my painting is called “Seze” meaning in the English name: blue flower. I wanted to add her dragon into the painting as well to show the action and the beauty of the scene itself. Adding this dragon, again is showing the fact that although the dragon is a creature and the so called government in the movie despise them, the dragons also have there own emotions, and the unique part about saying that is that Neytiri and Seze are bound together by there queues, this bonds them mentally and physically, so no matter what one felt, they both felt the same thing. The scene itself is them in battle, but that’s all I’ll say so that I don’t spoil anything. But coming back to my painting, It was such a learning experience, it showed me what worked, and what did not. From the contrast of colors, to adding depth to create the realism illusion, it wasn’t easy. I had to use my color theory and some peer insight to help me along with this process, getting the peer insight, it helped me open my ideas more, and I myself enjoy collective criticism, it helps me better my views, especially on a piece of this size.
Seeing the end result I couldn’t be more happy and proud with myself for finishing and seeing what I could do, and hopefully with this experience of painting this piece, I can do more with future projects. Personally, it’s taught me a lot, and I will use what I’ve learned to create more pieces in the near future.
